As a part of Mental Health Awareness Month, the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) invites you to join us in celebrating the 7th annual Children's Mental Health Awareness Day on May 9, 2012. Many youth who are identified (by themselves or by others) as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or questioning (LGBTQ) are routinely subjected to name-calling, bullying, and other forms of harassment. And even LGBTQ allies may be victimized. Underlying these behaviors can be discrimination and hate—which sometimes leads to violence.

This special celebration is a legacy of former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger and was established to underscore the important role children play in the Armed Forces community. According to Military K-12 Partners, today there are more than 1.2 million military children, and since 2001 approximately 2 million children have experienced deployment of a parent.

Adolescents use alcohol more frequently than they do all other illicit drugs combined, according to the 2010 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. The study found the following rates of alcohol use among adolescents in 2010: 1) aged 12 or 13: 3.1 percent, 2) aged 14 or 15: 12.4 percent, 3) aged 16 or 17: 24.6 percent, and 4) aged 18 to 20: 48.9 percent.

As the holiday season approaches, many of us begin to look forward to spending time with family and friends, and to sharing in the joys of the season. However, for people who have been exposed to a traumatic event, the holiday season may bring up negative feelings. Especially at this time of year, thinking about loved ones who have died can be painful—particularly for those who have recently lost someone.
