National Breakthrough Series Collaborative Update

On September 8-9, 12 teams selected to participate in the first NCTSN Breakthrough Series Collaborative (BSC) on the Adoption and Implementation of Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT) met for their first face-to-face Learning Session in Washington, DC.

The BSC teams, which consist of Network members, consumers/family members and community partners, worked with the BSC faculty to review their goals, strategies, and experiences thus far in the adoption and implementation of TF-CBT.

Each team showed impressive commitment to the process. Several NCTSN centers attended in the midst of Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Unfortunately, the Catholic Charities Team from Jackson, Missippi was unable to attend the Learning Session due to the impact of Hurricane Katrina, but they are eager to continue participation in the BSC.

The BSC teams are currently in the first "Action Period," which means they are busy developing and testing their small changes in practice that can be quickly tested and modified and retested building upon the lessons learned in each test cycle.

The BSC teams are already gearing up for Learning Session 2, to be held January 19-20, 2006 in San Diego. More information about Learning Session 2 will be forthcoming, but if you should have questions, please email Nancy Timmons at ntimmons@mednet.ucla.edu .

Helping Traumatized
Children Learn

This report, recently released by Massachusetts Advocates for Children, includes a very readable review of research on the impact of trauma on learning as well as a proposed policy agenda. The report outlines the steps schools can take to become "trauma sensitive" and create atmospheres that are conducive to learning for all students. Currently, five sites in Massachusetts are being funded by the legislature to test the strategies outlined in this report.

The report, recently, can be found at http://www.massadvocates.org/.
